In-House Recruitment: why invest in a specialist IP Consultant?

5

There is a saying that a business is only as good as the people within it. Therefore recruiting and retaining the best people for your business is pretty fundamental to its ongoing success.

  • Identify the skills you need
  • Understand the availability of those skills within the current market
  • Assess and address the competition you face
  • Play to your strengths…and let others play to theirs!

Defining what’s “best” in a business where the In-House IP team is a much smaller percentage of the overall workforce can be a minefield. Recruiting into those teams usually happens far less frequently than in other “core” areas of the business (eg. Research Scientists, Engineers), but when it does, it’s just as important to get it right. Getting it wrong can be costly, in time, productivity, morale and reputation, as well as financially.

Internal recruitment teams rarely, if ever, have expert knowledge of the IP market. Relative to the amount of recruitment they handle across the whole of the business, it’s not high on their radar, not a priority.

Not the best message for recruiting the best IP people when you need to.

Here at Sacco Mann, our specialist Patent and Trade Mark Division offers a wealth of experience and advice on recruiting Patent and Trade Mark professionals, because that’s all we do. No Engineers, no Research Scientists, we leave that to the experts in those fields.  We can advise you on:

  • Who’s available within the current market,
  • With the skills and experience you need (in IP)
  • What’s important to them and what they’re looking for from a new employer
  • How you can attract them and retain them ahead of other potential employers

Don’t just take our word for it:

“I would highly recommend Catherine French and Claire Morgan as experts in IP recruitment consultancy.  The IP sector is small and specialised, so it was essential in my opinion to instruct a team with specialist knowledge in the technical field for which we were recruiting. I had worked with Catherine French previously and as a patent team leader, I recommended her to the company as a highly experienced, extremely knowledgeable and thorough recruiter who has a strong appreciation of how best we could go about attracting the most suitable attorney for the role. Catherine and Claire did an excellent job and actually surpassed my expectations by enabling the process to run as smoothly and positively as possible due to the very high level of engagement they provided, leading to a very successful outcome.”  VP and Chief Patent Counsel for a global pharmaceutical company
